AnonyCon game lineup

Here’s what we’ve got for you all up at Stamford in 2 weeks:

Name: The Children of Frynn
System: Swords & Wizardry
Time: Friday 8pm
By: James Carpio.
The task was given to you to seek out a great Dragon named Loredron the aged, an ancient Dragon knowing the pains of age more than reason or wisdom. It has been thrice a fortnight now that the great Dragon had made its appearance at the outpost demanding weekly sacrifice. It is unfortunate that you wandered into town during a time of crisis. Where once children played atop the battlements, there are now armored guards, where there was once laughter now there are they cries of mothers, and where men knew peace the air reeks of fear and distress.

Name: The World of Insufficient Light
System: Spookybeans
Time: Friday 8pm
By: Ben Morgan.
The Hollow has always been a magnet for all kinds of supernatural weirdness, and there’s no place more magnetic than Votkatonick University. But it seems now things are finally coming to a head.

Okay, so you’ve got to fight an ancient menace from another dimension, avert the Apocalypse, make out with your vampire boyfriend, and find time to study for mid-terms! What’s a demon slayer to do?

Inspiration: Buffy/Angel, Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Charmed, Teen Wolf, any drama on the CW, White Wolf RPGs, Cthulhu mythos stuff.

Name: [Scenario Name Deleted For Security Purposes]
System: Paranoia (2nd edition sensibilities, streamlined core mechanic)
Time: Saturday 9am
By: Ben Morgan.
“Welcome Troubleshooters! It’s another wonderful daycycle in Alpha Complex, and The Computer has an incredibly nifty mission for you! What’s the mission? Hmm, what was your Security Clearance again? Oh, sorry, that information is classified. Rest assured it will probably involve all the wonderfully exciting things that most Troubleshooter missions entail. Just remember that those awful mutants and Secret Societies will try to stop you from completing your mission, so do your duty to The Computer and execute those nasty traitors wherever you find them. They may have even infiltrated your Troubleshooter team. Perish the thought! It’s alright, The Computer has every confidence that you’re up to the task. So have fun, and don’t forget: Trust no one, and keep your laser handy!”

Name: Terror at the Lake!
System: Spookybeans
Time: Saturday 2pm
By: Ben Morgan.
Welcome to Camp Creepy Lake, the world’s only horror film theme camp! Located at Lake Quahanachuck, about 20 miles northeast of The Hollow, the camp is the perfect getaway for anyone tired of the banalities of city life. Camp Creepy Lake (officially Camp Pinewood) is the newest pet project from Bradley Real Estate Ventures. Corporate dirtbag Chad Bradley picked up the property in foreclosure, after the previous owners had some trouble keeping the camp running. The kids have all been signed up by their well-meaning parents, and they all end up at the bus stop to head into the hills for 2 weeks of horror movie mayhem. On Friday night, the fun begins…

Inspiration: Sleepaway Camp, Friday the 13th, The Blair Witch Project, Poison Ivy (the one with Michael J. Fox & Nancy McKeon, not the one with Drew Barrymore), Meatballs, Addams Family Values, the Kamp Krusty episode of the Simpsons, any screwball summer camp movie.

Name: All American Massacre
System: The Family
Time: Saturday 8pm
By: Ben Morgan.
“It’s an Outrage. Our family’s worked this land for more’n seven generations. It’s ours, we earned it. When they brought them shiny new machines into the slaughterhouse, it put a lot of honest hard-working folks out of a job. It’s gettin’ harder and harder to provide for your own these days. And now some… interlopers come waltzing in like they own the damn place. We’ll just see about that.

Junior, get the chainsaw. We got work to do.”

Inspiration: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, House of a Thousand Corpses

Convention Roundup: AnonyCon 2012, TotalCon 2013, and Dreamation 2013

In early December we’re going to be in Stamford CT for AnonyCon. James is running The Children of Frynn, and I’ll be running The World of Insufficient Light, Terror at the Lake (both Spookybeans), and All American Massacre (The Family). I’ll also be running Paranoia for old times’ sake.

In February, we’re splitting our efforts. The weekend of the 22nd to the 24th, James will be at TotalCon in Mansfield MA, and I’ll be going to Morristown NJ for Dreamation. I just submitted several games (same lineup as AnonyCon, so if it’s easier to get to Morristown than Stamford, there you go).

Metatopia 2012 and Other Updates

Just got back from Metatopia last night. Fantastic weekend all around.

I ran two playtests for The Family, both went very well. I was able to determine the practical minimum and maximum group sizes (3 and 5 respectively, plus GM, though there may be an option for GMless), and several edits to the rules. The actual play experience was actually extremely close to the ideas I had floating around in my head when I was pounding on the rules, so that was a pleasant surprise. In both cases the players were phenomenal, and immediately latched onto the ideas I was trying to convey, and did outstanding jobs in bringing that to life during the games. On one hand, I didn’t get a bunch of old school grognards that were going to try and break my game (which at some point is actually desirable during early playtesting), but on the other, I found my target audience, so yay.

The rest of the weekend was taken up by panels. I sat with Nathan Paoletta on a couple of graphics design panels, where we gave (IMO) some very good advice on art & graphic design for people who are working on projects and need some help in that area. I also attended a bunch of other great panels, Lizzy Stark and Ben Walker were on a LARP panel that delved into the psychological and emotional effects of LARPing, and how those things are highlighted by Nordic style LARPing, as opposed to a lot of the stuff that goes on here in the US, where those sorts of things are afterthoughts at best (at least in my experience). There were some other great panels on self-publishing, working with artists, working with editors, how indie game design elements are creeping into maintsteam game design, using historical elements in your campaign or setting, and lots others I can’t remember right now.

Now that I’m back, first order of business is to get the revisions in on the Family playtest rules, and release them into the wild so other people can run it, and I can figure out if the game text properly explains how to run the game so that people that don’t have access to my head can understand it.

Also, because I am the kind of guy I am, today I created a font. It’s just a distressed version of Impact that I can use for branding on all the stuff I’m working on for The Family. Yes, it’s very similar to Impacted, but it’s all mine (and has more characters). Expect to see buttons & stickers soon. And eventually, custom card decks (front and back). Oh yeah.

PS: Possible T-Shirt idea:

We apologize for the inconvenience…

I’m currently in the middle of overhauling the Spookybeans gallery, it will be back up soon.
